well, im studying at Leeds Met as a mature student, I spent my 18-21's travelling the world and living aboard. Now im back in the UK I decided to do Economics 🙂 but I love philosophy and anything to do with the BIG questions.

peasants lol. Common intellectual retards do annoy me a lot, you encounter plenty in Leeds. Although, the socialist in me does say its usually not their fault. I don't claim to be a genius by any standards I just inquire into stuff in the easiest form possible, I'm a Lazy intellectual. Some people don't even think of a question, never mind finding the answer.

I wouldn't rule out there being more than just evolution to explain things like the eye though. As for now, I'm happy to slightly gloss over that problem of evolution 🙂 However some evolutionist would say the eye has been solved with sound scientific method. I don't think creationism or irreducible complexity(design) have any credibility though. I suppose if you asked me if my acceptance of evolutional theory had anything to do with my atheism I would have to answer â€œYesâ€.

HmmMmmMmm, well after looking into it a bit more there seems to be two fields of argument over the eye. 1. It evolved from light sensitive cells to the modern eye over a long period of time etc, and examples of each stage can be found today. 2. It has so many complex parts that its a leap of faith to believe that the eye could have formed by mutation and each step being useful separate from each other to finally make the modern eye etc. I would say from what I have found the evidence for the eye does have gaps, but I still accept the evidence for many other aspects of evolution do make it a credible and scientific fact. Such as fossil records, genealogy, examples of bacteria evolving in days etc! Its a bit like a scene, we cannot visibly see the happening, but there is so much evidence against the we can conclude he did it without reasonable doubt.

Oh I'm still about, just had to have a break with our conversation as my head was starting to feel over used. Now that I have spent a few days watching mindless TV it feels up to some more work. As for Evolution I know that some people do have concerns with the gaps in the theory but I cannot say I have looked into these much. Something to do with the lack of Transitional species or possibly something else? However based on Fossil records, Genetics and the amazing appearance of complexity in nature which through evolution can be explained in simple means, I do feel the evidence for is a lot more than Against. Being a rational and critical thinker though, I don't accept it blindly or dismiss any criticism of the theory.

I guess you could define good and evil as Hurts, doesn't hurt and with permission, ? I think there is always some element of selfishness in many good acts as its beneficial to the receiver and the giver. Dawkins uses the example of Reputation to incline that if your always a receiver and not a giver, the small community you live in will remember this and therefore stop giving to you. i.e always having your back scratched and never returning the favour ultimately ends in you being ostracised, especially in a natural wild environment. In Modern society though this is alot more complex and doesn't necessarily have to be the case, bad guys do get ahead 🙂

Thanks for the recommendation, I haven't studied much philosophy but A.C. Grayling does have some points that from my subjective view do seem rational and well thought out. I know other Authors such as Daniel Dennett and Richard Dawkins share the belief that humans do have Innate goodness in them which can be down to Evolutionary traits or a evolving moral consensus that we consciously alter. Being in Law I am sure you have studied Human behaviour more than me 🙂
